Blue 3.2020.1 – Stella de Belligny

The artwork captures the essence of nature through the power of abstraction to evoke profound emotions. Using deep shades of blue, Stella de Belligny creates a composition that is both visually striking and potentially useful for seeking well-being. This painting continues her artistic explorations while offering a new and enriching perspective on the relationship between humanity and art.

“An acquaintance once gave me a very specific commission: a painting that was entirely blue, with no other color except white. – ‘I don’t like any other color. If there’s even the slightest hint of red, yellow, etc., I wouldn’t want it.’ This challenge led me to explore different shades of blue, but I still had to preserve the strength and vibrancy that this person loved in my work. If I hadn’t received this commission, I probably wouldn’t have gone down this path. Today, I thank him for it. If he only knew what lies behind my blues…” Presented with a white border. Analysis of the work "Blue 3.2020.1"

Stella de Belligny's work "Blue 3.2020.1" is a visual exploration that follows in the tradition of her previous works, while capturing a new aspect of nature's power and emotional depth through abstraction. This painting, dominated by intense shades of blue, demonstrates the artist's ability to fuse texture, color, and light to evoke feelings of serenity and contemplation.

Color palette and atmosphere: The dominant deep blue immediately creates an impression of infinity. The choice of this color is not merely aesthetic; it carries connotations of calm, depth, and mystery. Blue evokes vast oceans and endless skies, offering the viewer a space for reflection and introspection. This use of blue echoes the influence of Pierre Soulages, an artist whose explorations of light and darkness through dark surfaces have profoundly impacted the artist. As in Soulages' works, monochrome becomes a means of capturing light and creating a dynamic interaction with the surrounding space.

Exploring Textures and Movement: The artwork is distinguished by its rich, palpable texture, achieved through expressively applied layers of paint. Brushstrokes and striations create a sense of movement reminiscent of waves in motion or winds blowing across a coastal landscape. This textural quality lends the canvas an almost tactile quality, inviting the viewer to imagine the sensations of touching the rough surface and smooth ridges. Areas of white and black blend into shades of blue, creating an effect of depth and three-dimensionality.

Contrast and dynamism: The work is marked by a striking contrast between light and dark areas. The illuminated sections stand out against the darkness, reminiscent of moments when natural light meets deep shadows. This contrast between light and dark, typical of Stella de Belligny's work, suggests a constant struggle between visibility and the unknown, knowledge and mystery. The abstract forms and fluid movements bring dynamism to the composition, making the scene vibrant and in perpetual flux.

Reflection on nature and environmental impact: As with other works by the artist, the painting invites reflection on the beauty and fragility of nature. The use of natural elements as inspiration for abstract motifs raises a subtle question about our interaction with the environment. The painting evokes seascapes or open horizons, reminding us of the need to preserve these spaces of beauty in the face of climate change and human impact.

Viewer well-being and experience: This artwork offers a sense of well-being through its potential for self-discovery. Its color and ability to evoke the serenity of natural elements soothe. Contemplating it invites the viewer to slow down, relax, and allow themselves to be carried away by the subtle movements of the paint. The painting becomes a space for meditation, a place where thoughts can wander, far from daily concerns, to connect with deeper sensations of calm and balance.
