Stadium – Jicé

Stadium is a powerful work that transforms a familiar place into a dreamlike and mysterious scene. Thanks to a mastery of perspective, textures and plays of light, the artist invites us to reflect on emptiness, absence, and the relationship between monumental architecture and time. The work, while being perfectly balanced, also conceals a symbolic depth which invites us to explore what these empty places say about our passage in the world.

Analysis of the work Stadium by Jicé – (Oil on canvas, 120 x 120 cm)

The work is part of an approach where space and geometry become areas of visual exploration. The artist stages a stadium, a place of gathering and spectacle. His aesthetic interpretation is dark and dreamlike, it reflects his unique vision of the place. It is marked by the contrasts between the grandiose architecture and the human absence. We feel the power of this special atmosphere.

Composition and perspective: The scene is dominated by a bird's eye view of a stadium. It is enhanced by a deep perspective which immediately draws the spectator's eye towards the center of the arena. The vanishing point catches the eye and encourages you to explore the stands and the center of the stage. We are troubled by the immensity of empty space. The repetition of the curved stands introduces a hypnotic visual rhythm, and the central void of the stadium, often animated by crowds and events, is here transformed into a dark and mysterious zone. This absence of spectators gives the work a silent presence where architecture plays the main role. Jicé thus leaves room for a reflection on the relationship between the space designed for the collective and the solitude of absence. Everyone will find meaning in it according to their interiority.

Colors and lights: The color palette is dominated by cool tones, mainly shades of deep blue and black, which create a nocturnal or twilight ambiance. This use of blues, in contrast with lighter touches, raises questions. Blue, which frequently evokes calm and depth, gives this stage the appearance of a place suspended between reality and dream. The touches of light on the stands and around the structure give the impression of diffused lighting, accentuating the mystery. They evoke artificial lights coming from outside. Jicé uses light here to emphasize the ambiguity of this space.

Texture and material: As in his other works, Jicé excels in his oil painting technique. The surface of Stadium is rich in layers which create a feeling of depth and substance. The brushstrokes add a tactile dimension to the work, recalling the rough surface of concrete structures. This texture also accentuates the idea of decay or aging. The stadium, although imposing and vast, seems marked by time, almost abandoned. This aspect contributes to the melancholic poetry of the work. Architectural grandeur is contrasted with the fragility of passing time.

Symbolism and interpretation: The stadium, as a symbol, is a place of gathering, spectacle, and shared emotions. However, in the work, this place usually vibrant with life is empty here, creating a dissonance. This absence of human life could evoke a reflection on solitude, on the places we leave behind us, or even on the way in which time alters even structures designed for eternity. The void in the center of the arena can symbolize the infinity of possibilities, a space that remains here in waiting. It could also represent the contrast between the past animation of a place and the current silence, questioning the temporality and the impact of human activities on the spaces they occupy.
