Review of the work “Red Alley” by Jicé

“Red Alley ” is a work that transports the viewer into a twilight urban scene. Using the oil on canvas technique, Jicé creates a particular pictorial depth. The painting is framed by an American box which provides a visual impact. This 45 x 55 cm format offers an intimate look at a landscape that is both vast and confined.

The chromatic palette is dominated by red, gray and green tones which reinforce the impression of contrasts like a duality between heat and cold. The painting depicts a central alley topped by an industrial red structure that appears to support a subway line. This intense red contrasts with the darker tones of the surrounding structures, creating a visual tension that evokes both an atmosphere of danger and an invitation to discover what lies within this passage.

The scene is built around complex perspectives, with a metal structure overlooking the view. It is a reference to the urban world Jicé 's work . This reddish metal roof, supported by imposing pillars, recalls the infrastructure of bridges, stations or warehouses. The artist captures here an almost cinematographic moment, like a scene frozen between day and night, where the reflections on the wet ground add a subtle dynamic to the latent movement of the city. The atmosphere is marked by a palpable solitude, reinforced by the absence of clearly defined human figures. This gives the work a certain melancholy. However, the blurred shapes in the background, as well as the use of diffused light, suggest an implicit human presence, as if the city itself were inhabited by shadows that blend into the setting.

By playing on the contrasts between the abstract and the figurative, Red Alley embodies the aesthetic of Jicé . He transforms an ordinary scene into a moment imbued with visual poetry, where material and color express the interaction between man and his urban environment.
