Review of the work “A Quiet Sunday” by Jicé
In this painting, Jicé offers an urban scene created with great technical mastery and a poetic gaze. The choice of a bird's eye view, a recurring signature of the artist, allows the viewer to adopt an aerial perspective which accentuates the impression of peaceful strolling in an anonymous city. This privileged point of view highlights the contrast between the geometric lines of the pedestrian crossing and the fluidity of the characters who cross the composition.
The theme of urban and industrial aesthetics, so dear to Jicé, is revisited here through a more intimate setting, where the raw materiality of the structures gives way to the softness of the human presence. The ground, marked by worn areas, tells the traces of daily life in the city: the passage of pedestrians, bicycles and the signs of time which alter the road markings. The touches of paint which seem partially erased, particularly in the inscriptions on the ground, recall the way in which Jicé captures the wear and tear of time on the urban environment.
The color palette, dominated by bright reds and earthy grays, expresses a tension between the human warmth of the characters and the coldness of the city. The red of the ground, almost aggressive in its intensity, becomes a central element of the composition, contrasting with the tranquility of the cyclists and the pedestrian. These characters are blended into the urban space, their shadows blending with the surface of the ground.
This strong contrast between the individual and the city underlines Jicé 's approach in the representation of urban and industrial scenes: it is not simply a question of depicting landscapes of concrete and steel, but of revealing the subtle interaction between humans and these structures. The angles of view chosen by Jicé allow us to appreciate these everyday moments in a new light, where poetry emerges from the most ordinary scenes.
