Lake – Stella de Belligny

The work is both visually captivating and deeply meditative. Through the use of collages, papers and inks, the artist manages to capture not only the essence of a natural landscape, but also an emotional and poetic dimension that transcends simple representation. Each fold, each texture tells a story, and the viewer is invited to lose themselves in the richness of details, while being enveloped by the soft and soothing light.

From the series collages, China paper, silk and inks, LAC is a work where the mediums become a construction material. By tearing more than cutting, I create like a craftsman or a sculptor, favoring direct contact with my hands. This gesture is for me a deep and tactile connection with the material. Sepia tones dominate, evoking a soft and warm light. This study was born from the influence of the Franco-Chinese artist Li Chevalier, whom I had the pleasure of meeting. The collages add a textural dimension, while the inks provide subtle, deep nuances, heightening the atmosphere. Stella de Belligny

Analysis of the work “Lac” (80 x 120 cm) by Stella de Belligny

This work is part of his series of collages using China paper, silk, pigments and inks. This painting is a testament to his deeply tactile approach to art, where the materials themselves become an integral part of the composition, not only through their visual presence, but also through their texture and ability to evoke sensation.

Analysis of Materials and Technique: In “Lac”, Stella de Belligny favors a direct manual gesture with the material, tearing more than she cuts, which creates an artisanal and almost sculptural approach. China and tissue paper are not simply decorative elements; they form the basis of a surface rich in textures, each layer revealing additional complexity to the composition. The cracks and folds of the paper accentuate the impression of relief and organicity, reinforcing the sensation that the surface breathes and lives before the viewer's eyes. The use of inks and pigments adds subtle nuances that bring depth to the work. The inks blend gently into the canvas, creating a play of light and shadow that simulates soft, diffused light. The dominant sepia tones evoke a nostalgic warmth, reminiscent of the golden light of dusk. This luminous effect, combined with the texture of the paper, creates an atmosphere which combines the calm of nature and a certain melancholy.

Atmosphere and Inspiration: Influenced by the French-Chinese artist Li Chevalier , Stella de Belligny integrates elements of traditional Chinese aesthetics into "Lac", notably in the use of negative spaces and ink shades to reinforce the atmosphere. The work seems suspended in a space between dream and reality, a landscape on which the materiality of the collages mixes with a poetic abstraction. The composition exudes a serenity which reflects the harmony between the different natural elements: the calm lake, the solid rocks and the indistinct horizon where the light seems to dissolve. This combination of materials and colors makes the viewer feel like they are witnessing a moment suspended in time, capturing the ephemerality of light and landscape.

Symbolic and Emotional Dimensions: “Lake” is a work that is deeply connected to the earth, the natural landscape and the cycles of time. The choice of warm colors, raw materials and collage techniques suggests an intimate connection with nature, but also an awareness of its impermanence. The layers of paper, torn and recomposed, perhaps symbolize the way in which nature and the landscape are continually shaped and transformed, both by external forces and by the passage of time. The textured surface evokes a form of memory, as if the landscape itself bore the marks of passing time. The viewer is invited to explore this surface rich in details and to feel the materiality of the work. This tactile gesture that Stella de Belligny places at the center of her work results in a physical connection, not only between the artist and the material, but also between the work and the viewer.
