Lake 2 – Stella de Belligny
The painting is a subtle exploration of texture, light and space, a work that transcends the boundaries of traditional painting to become a sensory and contemplative experience. Stella de Belligny, inspired by her meeting with Li Chevalier and his techniques, manages to create a work that resonates with its simplicity and depth, offering a visual and emotional refuge to those who take the time to immerse themselves in it. (Mixed Technique: Collage of China and Silk paper, Pigment, ink. On canvas presented with a white border)
China Paper Collection: This canvas, made with collages of China paper, silk and inks, is a work where the mediums become a construction material. By tearing more than cutting, I create like a craftsman or a sculptor, favoring direct contact with my hands. This gesture is for me a deep and tactile connection with the material. This study was born from the influence of the Franco-Chinese Artist Li Chevalier, whom I had the pleasure of meeting. Collages of China paper and tissue add a textural dimension, while the inks provide subtle, deep nuances, heightening the atmosphere.

Analysis of the work
“Lac 2”, a work from the “Papier de Chine” collection by Stella de Belligny, embodies a harmonious fusion of textures. This 80 x 100 cm canvas, made with collages of China paper, silk and inks, demonstrates the artist's commitment to exploring the materiality of his art and establishing a tactile connection with the surface of the canvas.
1. Texture and materiality:
The painting is distinguished by its textural richness, a result of the collages of China paper and silk which constitute the surface of the canvas. By favoring tearing over cutting, Stella de Belligny introduces an element of spontaneity and naturalness into her creative process. Each fold and each relief created by these papers brings a tactile dimension to the work, encouraging the viewer to imagine the sensation of touch. This process, which is more akin to an artisanal or sculptural approach than to traditional painting, highlights the influence of the Franco-Chinese artist Li Chevalier, with whom she shares an interest in materiality and collage techniques.
2. Use of inks and color palette:
The use of inks allows Stella de Belligny to play with subtle shades of brown, beige and off-white, evoking serene landscapes and the calm expanses of a lake in the dusk. The inks provide a fluidity and transparency that contrast with the denser texture of the paper, creating a visual balance between depth and lightness. This earthy, calming palette invites the viewer into a moment of contemplation, evoking images of silent, introspective landscapes, a reflection of nature in its purest form.
3. Composition and Atmosphere:
The work presents a horizontal composition that evokes the tranquility of a distant horizon, with lines that seem to blend into the blur of distance. This minimalist approach to composition allows texture and subtle nuances to become the protagonists of the work. The white border framing the canvas accentuates this feeling of openness and space, creating a soft transition between the work and the viewer's environment, as if the work itself was merging with its frame.
By creating a work where the medium is not only a tool, but an integral part of the message, Stella de Belligny succeeds in establishing a sensory connection with the viewer. Direct contact with materials and a tangible texture make this piece not only a visual, but also tactile and emotional experience. The choice of materials and techniques invites reflection on the ephemeral and fragile nature of landscapes, and on our own relationship with natural environments and our inner world.
